Power Move Mondays

Monday December 5, 2011

Moms and dads are working hard to make this a joyous holiday season and year. Every cent counts when it comes to the basics, like putting food on the table and buying winter clothes and shoes for growing kids.

Unfortunately, our budgets are possibly about to get even tighter. Ouch!

If Congress doesn’t extend the payroll tax “holiday” by the time it expires at the end of this year, most paychecks in America will shrink. [1] This tax holiday was put in place in 2010 to stimulate the economy. According to the New York Times, if the payroll tax holiday were extended, “the average working family would have close to $1,500 a year more to spend, according to Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader.”[2] And, on the other hand, if Congress refuses to act, then middle-class families are going to get hit with a tax increase at the worst possible time. [3]

Raising taxes should start with millionaires and billionaires, and with the many giant corporations that somehow manage to evade all taxes, but not with struggling families. [4] Yet, some Grinches in Congress are standing in the way of real economic recovery for working families and for our national economy.

*Tell your member of Congress to extend the payroll tax holiday so that working families can put food on the table and also give the economy the boost it needs!

The reality is that nearly 99% of sexually active women, regardless of their religious beliefs, use contraception at some point in their lives. It’s crucial that women have access to affordable birth control to prevent unintended pregnancies, plan the timing and size of their families, and protect their health.

Only 1 woman on the “Super Committee”? Ouch.

Here’s the math: Women are 50.7% of our population, only 17% of Congress, and an appallingly low 8% of the Super Committee. This lack of representation on the debt ceiling Super Committee which is charged with cutting $1.5 trillion from the federal budget is pathetic, particularly given that critical programs—like Medicaid, Medicare, child care, education, food assistance, and Social Security–which have the biggest impacts on women and families are at stake.

Stand up for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities who need Medicaid and CHIP!Right now, some members of Congress are trying to drastically cut our Medicaid and CHIP programs. Tell your members of Congress that cutting health care for our children, people who are disabled or elderly, while at the same time increasing tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, does not reflect our nation’s family values!

Each year, hundreds of women in the U.S. needlessly die during pregnancy and childbirth. Shockingly, 49 countries around the world do a better job of preventing women from dying from pregnancy-related complications than the U.S. Despite these terrible statistics, we do not have adequate information about exactly how many women are dying and why. Currently, only six states require reporting of pregnancy-related deaths and 29 states and the District of Columbia have no mechanism in place to review maternal deaths.

Contact your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the Maternal Health Accountability Act

Discrimination against mothers in our nation is disturbingly common. We regularly see it in hiring and wages, but did you also know that discrimination against pregnant women and mothers is happening in home loans and rental applications across the country?
What!?
This type of discrimination against mothers is illegal under the Fair Housing Act and shouldn’t be happening!
Fortunately, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) agrees and has amped up their investigations.

Please thank HUD for working to end housing discrimination against mothers. With one click on this link, you’ll help keep up the momentum to put a stop to this illegal practice: http://action.momsrising.org/go/978?akid=2778.1929015.gLvn8x&t=4

When we buckle our kids in their car seats or snuggle with them on the couch we shouldn’t have to think about neurotoxins and carcinogens. But a recent study found that we should. The majority of of foam samples from baby products were found to be laced with toxic flame retardants shown to be neurotoxins and carcinogens.

We need Congress to effectively regulate toxic chemicals in this country and make it easier for us to keep toxics out of our homes and lives.

Ask your U.S. Senators to immediately co-sponsor, and urge your leaders to support, the Safe Chemicals Act today!

Each year, hundreds of American women are needlessly dying during pregnancy and childbirth. Currently, 49 countries in the world do a better job than the U.S. of preventing maternal mortality and our rates of death are increasing. Unbelievably, we have no systematic way to track and investigate these deaths.
Turn our outrage into action and send a letter to your members of Congress now:

“The contrast between mothering in the top tier countries and those on the bottom is vast. Mothers’ needs do not vary much, but how these needs are met in different places explains much about the state of the world today.” The United States ranks 31st in the world in looking at how mothers live and are able to raise their children. Tell Congress to Get Moving on Toxic Chemical Safety for Kids!
All children should be able to have a healthy start. Yet too many are exposed to harmful chemicals in everyday products. It’s long past time to modernize our outdated chemical policies. Our outdated system leaves our families exposed to countless toxic chemicals every day that put our families at risk for cancer, learning disabilities, infertility, and more. Ask your Senator to protect our families by cosponsoring the Safe Chemicals Act!

I just took action by telling my Member of Congress to oppose H.R. 3′s dangerous restrictions on women’s health care coverage, and I hope you will, too.

Here’s what H.R. 3, approved by a House committee, does:

* Raises taxes and increases costs on individuals and small businesses with insurance plans that cover abortion, which could force individuals and employers to drop abortion coverage from their health insurance plans. It could even shut down the entire private market for insurance coverage that includes abortion.

* Writes into permanent law a ban on insurance coverage for abortion for ALL women who depend on the government for their health care. This includes low-income women currently covered under Medicaid, women who will become eligible for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, women serving in the U.S. military, federal employees, residents of the District of Columbia, women in federal prisons and women covered by the Indian Health Service.

* Unbelievably, H.R. 3 contains no exceptions for circumstances where a woman faces serious health consequences, even if continuing the pregnancy could cause stroke or paralysis.

Please help us by calling on your Member of Congress to oppose H.R. 3 and its dangerous restrictions on women’s health care coverage today.

Pledge- Knowledge is Power

Get empowered. Religiously affiliated hospitals often allow religious doctrine, not proven medical best practices, to dictate the kind of care and procedures that women experiencing pregnancy complications can receive. In these hospitals, patient care and medical standards be beholden to religious doctrine and, as a result, women’s health suffers and women’s lives can be at risk.

Ask your Members of Congress to support the High School Athletics Accountability Act and the High School Sports Information Collection Act. These two bills would require high schools to report information, broken down by gender, on sports participation and expenditures.

Schools are already collecting this information but do not make it public. By making this data publicly available, schools, parents, and students will be able to evaluate their athletics programs to make sure that they are treating boys and girls equally.
